Since I want to work in either a coaching or teaching environment , and as I have had previous experience working in a secondary school, I thought that working in higher education would further my experience and knowledge. This led me to complete my current work placement at the football academy at Clowne Campus, Chesterfield College. This involves both male and female students that range from the age of 16 and onwards. It was required on my placement that I attend every Wednesday from 9.30am until 3.30pm. Some of the jobs I am required to do whilst on placement include administration work, coaching, and publicising the academy to raise awareness to any other future participants. The academy is open to any of the student studying at the College, and has a wide variety of skills. Some of the students mainly play recreationally, but others play for either a local or professional team on a weekly basis.
Vision, Mission and Core Values
The vision for Chesterfield College is as follows:
“Our vision is that by 2015 we will become recognised nationally as an outstanding college by learners, employers, partners, regulators and the people who work for us”
(Chesterfield College, 2012)
This statement is saying that in 3 years time, the college wants to be recognised nation wide for its outstanding work. This includes academically and physically, like the football academy. Vision statements are good for the college to have because it gives everyone involved with the college something to visualise and to work towards to. “A vision statement is a vivid idealised description of a desired outcome that inspires, energises and helps you create a mental picture of your target. It could be a vision of a part of your life, or the outcome of a project or goal.” (Time Thoughts, 2011).
The mission statement for Chesterfield College is as follows:
“Equipping you with the skills and knowledge for progression and employment.”
(Chesterfield College, 2012)
Mind Tools (2011) states that “A Mission Statement defines the organisation's purpose and primary objectives.” A mission statement is important because it is a goal that your organisation, Chesterfield College, aims to achieve.
Chesterfield College aims to fulfil this mission by:
ü Putting the learner at the centre of our activities by meeting their needs and developing their potential
ü Providing a supportive, inclusive and welcoming environment
ü Acting as a catalyst for economic development by working with employers, stakeholders and local communities
ü Engaging, valuing and developing our colleagues
ü Ensuring efficiency, effectiveness and sustainability
ü Enhancing the College’s profile and reputation locally, regionally and nationally.
